Strengthening Our Net Zero Strategy with Renewable Electricity

Building momentum toward a lower‑carbon future

by Haworth, Inc.

As climate urgency grows, the need for innovative and adaptive solutions continues to shape business strategies. From developing circular products to proactively sourcing renewable electricity, Haworth remains committed to leading the market in corporate social responsibility.

Our Commitment to Climate Action

In 2022, Haworth became the first in the industry to announce validated Science Based Targets—both near-term and long-term—in pursuit of net-zero emissions by 2050. This drove our strategic priority to reduce emissions in line with climate science and avoid the most severe impacts of climate change. As the United Nations asserts, ending reliance on fossil fuels and investing in clean, affordable, and reliable renewable electricity is essential to meeting global climate goals.

When these targets were set, we knew a foundational strategy for achieving both milestones would be a commitment to investing in 100% renewable electricity equivalent to our manufacturing footprint by 2025.

Applying Renewable Electricity across the Haworth Group

Today, we’re happy to announce that Haworth has achieved its 2025 commitment. We have developed a renewable electricity portfolio that combines on‑site projects, utility green‑power programs, and high‑quality energy attribute credits (EACs). Together, these investments ensure that for every megawatt-hour our facilities consume, an equivalent amount of renewable electricity is generated and added to the grid. This milestone also marks early progress toward Haworth’s 2030 Scope 1 and 2 near‑term science-based target.

We also went beyond our original commitment. Our 100% renewalble electricity portfolio not only covers our manufacturing facilities but every Haworth-owned or -operated site worldwide. This includes the entirety of Haworth Group's showrooms, stores, offices, and manufacturing facilities.

Why 100% Renewable Electricity Matters

The path to get here wasn’t straightforward. Beginning in 2021, we set out to understand how electricity is sourced across our facilities around the world—in each market with unique suppliers, regulations, and available options. At the same time, we invested significant effort in helping our broader organization understand what renewable electricity means in practice.

Concepts like Scope 2 emissions, the market-based method, and the role of energy attribute certificates (EACs) became shared language across teams that had never spoken in carbon‑accounting terms before. That foundation mattered, because reaching 100% renewable electricity isn’t just about making the right purchase; it’s about understanding how these instruments work and why they’re essential to a science‑based climate strategy.

How EACs Support Progress Toward Net-Zero

Haworth has reported emissions from global energy sources in an annual corporate greenhouse gas inventory since 2018. This includes accounting for Scope 2 emissions from procured electricity from local utilities where we work and operate, as well as other energy sources like steam.

However, because the physical electricity we receive through the utility grid says nothing of its origin or how it was generated, renewable energy certificates (RECs)—or energy attribute certificates (EACs) globally—play an important role in accounting, tracking, and assigning ownership to renewable electricity generation and use.

Because the physical electricity we receive through the grid doesn’t reflect how it was generated, energy attribute certificates (EACs) play a critical role. These instruments track and assign ownership of renewable electricity generation and use. By procuring high‑quality EACs in the regions where we operate, Haworth is making significant early progress toward reducing and eventually eliminating Scope 2 market‑based emissions. This supports the transition away from carbon-intensive energy sources and contributes to a decarbonized energy grid.

This work also directly reduces the carbon footprint of our manufacturing operations, which in turn, affects our customers. Many of them use the data we transparently provide in their own emissions reporting for Scope 3. In this way, our achievement not only advances our goals but also meaningfully supports the decarbonization efforts of the designers, specifiers, and brands who choose Haworth products.

Principles That Guide Our Approach

Throughout our work, 3 principles shape our decisions—reflecting what matters most to the customers who rely on us:

  1. Accuracy and credibility
  2. Regional relevance
  3. Transparency and communication

This milestone represents both an accomplishment and a beginning. It fulfills our 2025 renewable electricity goal, but more importantly, it strengthens the foundation for the next phase of our net‑zero emissions pathway. As we continue investing in energy efficiency, electrification, renewable energy, and deeper supply-chain engagement, we do so with an ever-growing understanding of what credible climate action requires—and the lasting value it creates.

What’s Next

Reaching 100% renewable electricity is a major milestone, but the journey doesn’t end here. Haworth will continue advancing energy efficiency, responsible material use, and circular design principles, while working across our value chain to address Scope 3 emissions.

Our progress today strengthens the momentum behind the climate actions we’ll take next.
