Embracing the Future: Insights from Patricia Urquiola

A look at creativity, sustainability, and innovation

by Haworth, Inc.

In a recent interview with Haworth, renowned architect and designer Patricia Urquiola shared her thoughts on inspiration and the future of work. Her insights offer valuable lessons, particularly for interior designers looking to stay ahead in a rapidly changing world.

Finding Inspiration in Everyday Life

Urquiola draws inspiration from her daily life in Milan. She emphasizes the importance of stepping out of her apartment and exploring the city with curiosity. "Inspiration comes from the nicest and most simple circumstances that let you look at humanity in a different way," she explains. “But inspiration is actually more like perspiration. You get into the ambience, the things that surround you. Each morning, you feel them in a different way. How they get into you, I think, is the real process of inspiration.” By observing familiar places with fresh eyes, we can find new ideas in the most unexpected places.

The Role of Art

Art and creativity play a crucial role in Urquiola's approach to design. "Art helps me a lot," she says. “It’s through many diversified points of view, of creative people and artists, that we move through this world.”

Urquiola admires the mindset of artists, who often approach the future with sensitivity and creativity. For designers, adopting this mindset can lead to innovative solutions and a more profound connection with their work.

The Future of Work: Sustainability and AI

As we look to the future, sustainability remains a key concern. Urquiola emphasizes the need to deeply integrate sustainability into our practices. She references philosopher Timothy Morton and the importance of understanding different scales—from the materials used in design to the temporal and spatial scales of our actions. For designers, this means considering the broader impact of their work and making choices that contribute to a sustainable future.

Artificial intelligence is another significant factor shaping the future of work. Urquiola views AI as a tool that can enhance human capabilities but stresses the importance of maintaining a human-centered approach. "AI should be used creatively and responsibly," she advises. This means leveraging AI to streamline processes and enhance creativity while ensuring that human touch and sensibility remain at the forefront.

Urquiola also acknowledges the interconnectedness of our actions and the need for a holistic view of design. "We are in a moment when everything is changing," she notes. “The floor under our feet is not so solid, but this makes us more brilliant and sensible. We are more attentive.” All of us must stay attuned to changes in this dynamic environment and be prepared to evolve our practices accordingly.

Stay Optimistic

Despite the uncertainties of the future, Urquiola remains optimistic. "Fear is not a good companion," she notes, encouraging us to embrace change and find strength in our adaptability. By staying connected to creativity and remaining open to new ideas, we can navigate the complexities of the modern world and continue to create great spaces.
